The cover story:
I love Sydney at Christmas. I especially love the time warp between Christmas and New Year where the days blend, the sun is shining, it’s stinking hot, and the humidity builds into spectacular summer afternoon storms.
Dripping hot and sticky we had to flee the house. A major exhibition from the Hermitage museum in St Petersburg at the NSW art gallery was just the ticket, followed by a decadently long lunch. Two of my very favourite things to do.
Taking hundreds of photos as I always do of everything before I exit through the gift store, I was fumbling with my phone and belongings on the way out. Then bang! I was knocked by a stranger, sending my phone and other belongs scattering across the floor. No apology, no acknowledgement, nothing. Rudeness is becoming endemic.
Thankfully lunch quickly turned my frown upside down. I love Italian and this new restaurant, Alberto, was perfect. Creamy stracciatella cheese to mop with warm bread, rich braised tripe in tomato, and the fluffiest gnocchi in the world made for a simply divine lunch.
As the afternoon wore on and the wine kept flowing I started looking through my phone and I came across this image.
A random knock somehow created a lovely photo, as my phone snapped the floor on the way down. I hadn’t noticed how the movement of fans and arches danced with delight.
I have kept the outline and movement but changed the print from the tiled grey and ivory, adding teal and blues to represent the harbor and the cleansing waters of a Sydney summer, as well as the warm greys and eggshell that’s reminiscent of the Opera House with its curves and peaks translating into print.
A random bump turned into a beautiful collision.
